West Virginia

West Virginia offers K–12 students and their families a number of school choice options—an education savings account (ESA) program, homeschooling and intra-district and inter-district public school choice via open enrollment. West Virginia does not have magnet schools or charter schools.

Private School Choice

West Virginia is home to one of the most expansive education savings account programs in the country. It allows families to use program funds to send their children to private schools or customize an education plan to fit their needs.

Public School Choice

West Virginia has inter-district and intra-district open enrollment policies, which allow some students to transfer to traditional public schools outside their zoned schools. West Virginia does not have magnet schools.

Charter Schools

West Virginia is one of the few states that does not have charter schools. Charter schools are publicly funded schools that are free of many of the regulations that restrict traditional public schools.

Homeschool

Parents have to follow certain laws in West Virginia when homeschooling their children.
