School Choice in

Montana

Montana provides K–12 students and their families several types of school choice, including two private school choice programs, magnet schools, home schooling and public school choice via open enrollment. Montana does not have any charter schools.

Private School Choice

Montana has two school choice programs; a tax-credit scholarship, and an education savings account (ESA). These programs are available to all families to help send their children to participating private schools.

Public School Choice

Montana has inter-district and intra-district open enrollment policies, which allow some students to attend traditional public schools outside their zoned school. Montana also allows magnet schools.

Charter Schools

Montana is one of the few states that do not allow charter schools, which are publicly funded schools that are free from many of the regulations that restrict traditional public schools.

Homeschool

Parents have to meet certain laws in Montana when homeschooling their children.
